Current Research Interests

From secretions of salivary fluid in the mouth to sensations of pain, cold, taste and touch, ion transport proteins are central players in mediating these sensory and physiological functions. Ion channels and ion transporters are membrane proteins that regulate flow and balance of ions between the cytosolic and extracellular fluids.  They are involved in cellular signaling and homeostasis in addition to the diverse array of integrative functions from epithelial transport of ions to neuronal electrical signaling to maintaining the basal electrical rhythms of the heart. 

My laboratory studies few selected members of ion transport proteins involved in neuronal and excitable cell signaling and pH and ion homeostasis related to salivary secretion.

1. Voltage-gated sodium channel NaV1.1 channelopathy: Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy in Infancy (SMEI).

3. Ion transport mechanism in salivary secretion – pH, bicarbonate, chloride, water

Research Methodology
