Orthodontics is the subject to study the causes and treatments of anomalies and malocclusions that occur on the face and dentition. The laboratory of orthodontics in Seoul National University has history and tradition for more than 40 years since it was founded in 1964. The laboratory of orthodontics is performing clinical and basic research in the fields of orthodontics. We are in charge of education of students in school of dentistry and residents in orthodontics.
We are performing orthodontic treatments of dentition of growing patients and abnormal growth of maxillofacial skeleton, maxillary orthopedic treatment, orthodontic treatments of dentition of adult patients and abnormal oral and maxillofacial bone, and complex treatment of orthodontics and surgery. In addition, we are performing comprehensive management for orthodontic and maxillary orthopedic treatment of patients with various facial growth abnormalities or facial anomalies including patients with cleft lip and cleft palate with a three dimensional skeletal diagnosis using a computer. We contribute to orthodontics through basic research, collaborative practice with other department, and collaborative research related to dentition and facial anomalies.
-
Etiology of malocclusion
Once various causes of malocclusion is studied and classified, it is applied to the treatments.
-
Orthodontic Diagnostics
As we analyze various test data obtained from patients, we accurately diagnose the status of malocclusion of patients and identify orthodontic problems of patients. We select the appropriate therapeutic methods based on the patient’s malocclusion.
-
Preventive orthodontics
It is the orthodontic treatment to prevent the possible malocclusion or prevent the worse malocclusion in the future.
-
Treatments of growth control
It is the orthodontic treatment to prevent the orthodontic problems in the growth period which may get worse or improve the direction of skeletal growth, and improve the occlusion relationship by treating patients with malocclusion in the growth period through orthopedic devices.
-
Treatments of adult orthodontics and surgical orthodontics
It is the orthodontic treatment to obtain neat dentition and harmonious face by performing orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery through collaboration with department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery if skeletal causes such as lantern chin, short chin and facial asymmetry in adult patients with malocclusion.

Orthodontic Biomechanics and Materials
Biomechanics is the subject to study physical properties of various forces and responses of the body in order to control the movement of teeth by using orthodontic force during the orthodontic treatments. It is a very important field, because the foundation of all biological changes of alveolar bone and maxillary bone by orthodontic treatment is the force. Various materials such as wire and spring are used to deliver these forces. We continue to perform the studies on materials.

Causes and treatment of maxillofacial deformities
Maxillofacial deformities cause functional problems, relationship with systemic disease, and psychological social problems because the shape of the face which is not covered by clothing is abnormal. Because maxillary bone and teeth have some problems, aesthetic and functional problems are caused. Thus, it is required to have dental treatments including treatments performed by departments of Oral and maxillofacial surgery and orthodontics.

Causes and treatments of Cleft lip and cleft palate
Among maxillofacial deformities, cleft lip and cleft palate is the most representative one. Its frequency is the highest. It is reported to have one out of 700 people. There are various forms such as cleft lip, maxillary lip, cleft palate, unilateral cleft lip and cleft palate, bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate and facial heat with differences in the development, etiology and epidemiology.
